The Diocese of Blackburn

As a Church of England parish, we are part of the Diocese of Blackburn and under the pastoral oversight of its Bishops. Within that, we belong to Whalley Area Deanery, which covers an area stretching from Rishton northwards into the Ribble Valley.

Our German Partnership

During the Cold War period, formal inter-church conversations were held between the Church of England and the Protestant (or Evangelical) Churches of West and East Germany; these led in 1991 to the Meissen Agreement (named after the town where it was completed).

Since 1994, our Diocese of Blackburn has had a very active partnership with the Regional Church of Braunschweig in northern Germany; its area straddles the old Iron Curtain border.

In 1998, Great Harwood formed a parish partnership with the three villages of Gross Mahner, Klein Mahner, and Ohlendorf on the edge of the industrial area of Salzgitter. The partnership is currently dormant, but groups have visited regularly and during its 20 years we:

  • learnt about each other's churches, festivals, ministries, and practices
  • understood more about each other's histories (postwar and the divided and reunited Germany)
  • shared meals and formed friendships, and experienced different lifestyles
  • and above all, prayed, worshipped, and sang together

Great Harwood Churches

We work closely with the other Christian churches of our town, with a programme of joint services and events sponsored by Churches Together.
